Understanding Your Aura's Energy

Energy is everywhere we look. It affects how we interact with others and everything else in our lives at all times, including our conscious and subconscious thoughts. The way energy emits from us is a reflection of our energy body and inner world, and this projection and reflection of energies from within us are referred to as auras. Our auras are fascinating energy sources, as they don’t stay in the same frequency or vibration, just like our energetic field doesn't stay the same. It is all according to how we feel at any given time from within and how that may appear externally. Auras are a reflection of emitting our energy externally in a way that we cannot see but can certainly feel, as can others.

To better understand the role auras play in our lives and energy bodies, I had the pleasure of speaking with Sarah Hodge, the founder and owner of Aura Theory, a Virginia-based small business dedicated to aura photography and all-things mystical energy. She shares her knowledge about auras and why they are essential to acknowledge and work with daily.

1. Why are auras important?

Auras are a visual representation of our energy field—a constantly shifting reflection of our physical, emotional, and spiritual state. They help us understand how we’re showing up in the world, where our energy is thriving, and where we might need balance or support. Tuning into your aura is like having an energetic mirror, giving insight into your emotions, mindset, and personal evolution.

2. How do auras impact our consciousness?

Our auras don’t just reflect our energy—they shape our awareness. When we’re aligned and flowing freely, we feel clear, connected, and present. When our energy is stagnant or disrupted, we may experience brain fog, emotional heaviness, or even physical fatigue. The aura acts as an energetic bridge between the seen and unseen, influencing intuition, emotional responses, and the way we connect with others.

3. Are there ways to protect our auras? Should we protect them from sub-optimal energy?Absolutely! Just like you protect your physical space, your energetic space benefits from mindful upkeep.

Protection doesn’t mean fear—it’s about energetic hygiene. Some of my favorite ways to strengthen and clear the aura:

Movement – Moving your body shifts stagnant energy.

Visualization – Picture a golden or violet light surrounding your aura, acting as a filter for what you allow in.

Nature & Grounding – Spending time outside, especially barefoot, resets your energy field.

Boundaries – Protecting your aura also means protecting your time and emotional energy. Notice what drains you and honor your need for space when needed.

Auras are a fascinating topic, especially since they are our energies. Anything we may feel within can project without to the external reality we live in; that is why it's essential to know how to work with this energy when it comes to shifting it to a more optimal state when we wish, as well as protecting it from energies that are external to us that might not serve our greater good.

I'm thankful to Sarah for her insight and expertise. They serve as a great foundation for understanding auras, including the auras we may see when we take an aura photograph—which is pretty cool. I hope to try it out sometime!

Aura photography is an art form that showcases our internal states. We get to know ourselves more through auras and how our energy makes us unique. Aura energies allow us to gravitate toward certain things and people as they mirror our internal state. They add to our greater understanding of our soul and how we can interact with it. It is a great sense of awareness of our internal reality that we should always be connected to.
